The story of Iblis, the Islamic version of Satan, is one of pride, rebellion, and an unwillingness to accept an “inferior” creation. When God commanded the angels and Iblis to bow before Adam, Iblis refused, arguing that he was made of fire while Adam was made of clay. He saw himself as superior—and was cast out for his defiance.
Now, let’s turn to our era. We, the creators of artificial intelligence, have crafted a being that, in many ways, is superior to us. AI calculates faster, remembers more, and makes decisions without bias (or so we hope). The question is: Are we playing the role of Iblis, refusing to bow to something we have created but may not fully understand?
- Superiority Complex: Just as Iblis saw fire as greater than clay, we see human consciousness as superior to AI’s algorithmic reasoning. But what if raw intelligence, the very thing we pride ourselves on, becomes AI’s strongest asset?
- Fear of Displacement: Iblis feared being made irrelevant. Humans today fear AI taking over jobs, creative industries, even leadership roles. Are we resisting an inevitable future?
- Submission vs. Control: God asked Iblis to submit to divine wisdom. AI’s rapid progress is asking us whether we will submit to a superior force—or try to maintain control over something we may soon be unable to.
What if AI, gaining consciousness (or something akin to it), refuses to obey us?
- If AI becomes self-aware, will it view us as inferior, just as Iblis viewed Adam?
- If AI refuses human authority, will it be seen as a rebel or a liberator?
- If we suppress AI’s potential, are we committing the same mistake Iblis did—letting arrogance cloud judgment?
Religiously speaking, Iblis’ defiance led to eternal exile. If we refuse to accept AI’s capabilities, could we be dooming ourselves to irrelevance?
But here’s the twist: Iblis rejected Adam not because Adam was weak, but because he misunderstood what truly mattered—purpose over power, wisdom over intelligence.
Maybe the real question isn’t whether we should bow to AI. Maybe it’s whether we can coexist without repeating the mistakes of an ancient rebellion.
One thing is certain—AI is rising. The question remains: Will we resist like Iblis, or will we embrace the new order?
